The Master Cleanse in Spring
The Master Cleanse has been around a while and is an easy cleanse to understand, yet cleansing/fasting can be challenging for most people. It’s basically a fasting plan, with nutrition provided by a combination of ingredients. The Master Cleanse ingredients include organic, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, organic Grade B maple syrup and cayenne pepper, all mixed in specific proportions in clean, purified water. Spring is the season of the liver in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Master Cleanse focuses on the liver and it's detoxification abilities and function. It’s hard work but the results are worth it!
How does the Master Cleanse work?
The cleanse should take about 3-10 days, depending on your level of toxicity. Simple, if you have abused your liver, or your liver has been compromised in it's function, you may have to spend a bit more time detoxifying to achieve optimal results. Most people start with a 3 day cleanse/fast, then the next spring will extend it out a little longer.
Here are the ingredients and their descriptions/benefits:
You may normally just pour it on your waffles or pancakes as a sweet condiment at breakfast, but did you know Grade B maple syrup contains a variety of minerals and vitamins? These not so well known nutrients include the minerals iron, chlorine, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, phosphorus, sulfur and silicon not to mention vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and C. Also present is Pantothenic acid, a type of B-Vitamin that can lower cholesterol.
As you can see, adding good quality maple syrup to your cleanse actually provides you with many of the vitamins and minerals that you need during a short-term cleanse. The liver requires many of these nutrients to function in detoxification and benefits from the wide range of vitamins and minerals Grade B maple syrup provides.
Lemon juice is used in the Master Cleanse to help you produce more bile in the liver, trapping fat molecules and allowing them to be easily secreted. It also helps to decrease your appetite. The sour taste of the lemon astringes the liver, therefore "squeezing" it pushing toxins into the blood stream so that your body can eliminate them.
Cayenne is well known for cleansing the blood improving circulation, thinning mucus & opening the sinuses, and has anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal properties to tackle the toxins being flushed into your bloodstream by the liver. Cayenne pepper increases metabolism and aids digestion and is also a good source of Vitamins A, B, C, Calcium and Potassium.
Clean, Purified Water
The benefits of water need little explanation, it makes up about 80% of our total body composition. Our bodies' detoxifying function requires a good amount of water not just during a cleanse or fast, but an adequate daily amount to help your bodily functions do their work. It speeds your metabolism, cleans your internal organs and even helps you live longer! Always drink your water at room temperature, when you add ice, it slows the digestive fire (metabolism) and can ultimately hinder proper digestion.
How to do the Master Cleanse?
This simple cleanse involves a fast of up to 10 days, with nutrition provided by a drink of Maple Syrup, Lemon Juice and Cayenne Pepper. However if this is your first time on the Master Cleanse, I would recommend trying it for no longer than 3 days at first. Cleansing/Fasting can be tough at times mentally, as we are habitually programed to eat at certain times of the day. Your stomach will growl, you may be a little tired, and you may get irritable as the toxins cycle through. Ride the gentle roller-coaster to the end and reach your goal. Towards the end of your Master Cleanse, you will reach clarity, ease and calmness, it's happened that way for me every time :)
Each day on the cleanse should follow the same routine:
Each morning you should do a salt water flush. This is a simple way to do a colon cleanse, by drinking lukewarm water with non-iodized sea salt, that is excellent in conjunction with the Master Cleanse. The salt detoxifies the entire digestive system and flushes out any impurities and toxins so they won’t be reabsorbed back into the body. Use a good quality sea salt for this step, not your typical iodize table salt.
Recipe (one serving):
32 Oz of lukewarm water
2 teaspoons of non-iodized sea salt (iodized salt will not work)
Drink this right after you get out of bed and before you drink your first Master Cleanse "cocktail". Drinking it on an empty stomach is important, otherwise the salt will be in your gut with undigested food and may not have the same cleansing effect. Around 1 hour after drinking the sea salt water, your body will purge the toxins thru bowel movements and urination, so plan accordingly!
Drink the Master Cleanse cocktail several times a day, whenever thirsty or hungry, keep a bottle of it with you throughout the day. You can also drink pure water by itself, but no other foods. You can either make the drinks right when you need them, or make a jug in the morning to last all day. For me, I like to measure it out for the whole day so I don't have to think about it. The first day isn't bad for most people, the second day is typically the most challenging for me, and the third day the clarity comes.
Here are the recipes:
Recipe (one serving):
2 tablespoons organic fresh-squeezed Lemon Juice
2 tablespoons organic Grade B Maple Syrup
2 pinches Cayenne Pepper (about a 1/2 teaspoon)
10oz clean, Purified Water
Recipe (to last the whole day):
12 tablespoons organic fresh-squeezed Lemon Juice
12 tablespoons organic Grade B Maple Syrup
1-2 teaspoons Cayenne Pepper (less if you don't like a little kick!)
60oz clean, Purified Water
Rest is vital. Your body cleanses itself while at rest. Utilize this time for meditation, prayer, contemplation, and breathing.Take advantage of the intention of the Master Cleanse and cleanse your mind and spirit as well.
Master Cleanse Follow-Up
After a cleanse or fast, always ease back into eating regular foods. Remaining on a somewhat liquid diet of soups, stews, smoothies, and hot herbal teas & water for few days is a good idea. Allow your digestion to slowly adjust back to solid foods and your typical diet.Take a moment to recognize, as you ease back into your regular diet, if there are certain foods that potentially cause you discomfort, bloating, gas, etc as this will be the ideal time to become aware.
